The British maritime trade operations agency (UKMTO) said on Sunday that it had received reports of a drone attack in the Bab el-Mandeb strait in the Red Sea.
UKMTO earlier reported on drone activity launched from Yemen, as well as a possible explosion, and called on ships in the vicinity to exercise caution.
Reuters was unable to independently verify the reports.
The reported incident comes after a series of attacks in Middle Eastern waters since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas.
The Houthi group, an ally of Iran, seized an Israel-linked cargo ship last month. The group, which controls most of Yemen's Red Sea coast, had previously fired ballistic missiles and armed drones at Israel and vowed to target more Israeli ships.
There was no immediate comment from the Houthis on Sunday.
