Nikki Haley responded to a voter's question about the cause of the civil war by criticizing the state's management of individual freedoms

A voter asked during a conversation with the candidate for the 2024 elections in New Hampshire, " Why did the civil war break out in the United States?"".
The former US ambassador to the United Nations replied that "this is an easy question," before going on to criticize the US administration of individual freedoms at home at the time.
The cherry on top of Nikki Haley’s very bad week — @RonDeSantis brought in some South Carolina firepower to make sure Iowans know the truth about her liberal record.

"I find it crazy to answer this question in 2023 without mentioning slavery,"said her interlocutor.
During the Civil War (1861-1865), the Confederate South declared its independence from the United States and fought to preserve slavery, which was abolished in the rest of the country.
And Haley said, "What do you want me to say about slavery?"", In response to the 50-year-old man, she looked on the defensive and then turned to the audience to say "next question".

Haley faced a torrent of criticism for this response, which was broadcast on all American television screens.
"It was about slavery," President Joe Biden said on the X-platform, commenting on the recording.
A spokesman for the campaign team of Ron DeSantis, one of Haley's rivals in the Republican primaries, which Donald Trump is also fighting, mocked her response ,saying "Nikki Haley got herself into a big confusion that she raised herself".
When asked about the matter, Nikki Haley tried to back down on Thursday morning, telling a local radio station, "of course the Civil War was related to slavery and we all know that".
However, a number of people re-shared statements made by the candidate dating back to the period when she was governor of South Carolina.
At that time, Nikki Haley refused to change the Confederate flag of this state, although many consider it a symbol of slavery and racism.
She changed her mind after a white supremacist opened fire at a church in her state, killing nine African-American worshippers in 2015.
