McDonald's-Malaysia has filed a lawsuit against a movement promoting a boycott of Israel over "false and famous statements" that it says have harmed its business, and is demanding compensation of up to RM6 million (USD 1.31 million).
Malaysia, which is a Muslim-majority country, is a strong supporter of the Palestinians, and some fast brands in the country, as in some other Muslim countries, are being targeted with boycott campaigns due to the Israeli military offensive on Gaza.
McDonald's Malaysia has confirmed filing the lawsuit against BDS Malaysia to protect its "rights and interests," according to a statement released by the company on Friday.
In turn, BDS Malaysia said that it denies defaming the fast food company and will leave the matter to the judiciary.
The BDS movement aims to end international support for Israel's" oppression of the Palestinians " and pressure Israel to comply with international law.
